Dec. 30, 2013 Weekly Astrology Forecast: 2014′s Most Powerful New Moon!

new moon - rainbow colors

January kicks off with the strongest New Moon of 2014 on New Year’s Day. It’s an incredible time for kicking off your New Year’s resolutions!

This Capricorn New Moon lines up in the midst of the month’s strongest aspect pattern. This potent Grand Cross featuring Mars, Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto can deliver an abundance of challenge, opportunity or both!

12/30 (Mon)

Sun Square Uranus

Paradigm shifts in your outmoded life structures are supported with Uranus squaring the Capricornian Sun. Be guided by your intuitive flashes as you manage the structures that remain.

This aspect is part of the Sun-Mercury-Mars-Uranus-Pluto T-square.

Mars Square Pluto

It might be wise to keep your libido on a tight leash with Libran Mars square Pluto. Avoid situations that might stir up anger or violence, yours or someone else’s.

This volatile aspect can be put to good use by putting fresh energy into relationships and creative expression. This Mars-Pluto energy can also be positively directed into mutually enriching sex, exercise, athletics and fighting for a worthy cause.

This aspect is part of the Sun-Mercury-Mars-Uranus-Pluto T-square and Grand Cross (see below).

T-square: Sun-Mars-Uranus-Pluto

Two versions of a T-square featuring Mars, Uranus and Pluto peak today!

The first is a Sun-Mars-Uranus-Pluto T-square. This aspect pattern supports releasing outworn structures and engaging in God-revealing spiritual practices. It can also fuel empowerment and change in relationships and creative expression.

T-square: Sun-Mercury-Mars-Uranus-Pluto

A five-planet version of this aspect pattern, a Sun-Mercury-Mars-Uranus-Pluto T-square, also peaks today. Mercury’s addition is a reminder that your mental focus fundamentally shapes this aspect pattern’s outcome.

Grand Cross

Ready for a powerful aspect pattern that simultaneously radiates (take a breath) challenge, hope, revolution, insight, transformation, breakthrough, empowerment and joy? Welcome to a Grand Cross featuring Mars, Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto! This powerhouse planetary lineup started on 12/28*, peaks on 1/8 and ends on 1/10.

This Grand Cross adds Jupiter to the Mars-Uranus-Pluto T-square that started on 12/18. (Rather than linking back, I will repeat the most important things about that T-square here.) While a Grand Cross is the most intense and challenging aspect pattern in astrology, it is also an extraordinary time of opportunity. It’s like rocket fuel if you’re ready for big changes, major breakthroughs and quantum leaps!

Avoid accidents and conflict by exercising extra caution and avoiding dangerously volatile situations. With Jupiter in Cancer, this also applies to situations within your immediate or extended family. The less conscious a person is, the more this energy is likely to be experienced as chaos and instability.

Focus on Mars

It’s usually most helpful to interpret aspect patterns by thinking of the slower planets influencing the faster ones. The fastest planet in this Grand Cross is Libran Mars.

On the high side, powerful new beginnings in relationships and creativity are supported. As I mentioned while interpreting today’s Mars-Pluto square, so are mutually enriching sex, exercise, athletics and fighting for a worthy cause.

Focus on Jupiter

Jupiter is the second-fastest planet in this Grand Cross. Jupiter’s core meanings of joy, enthusiasm, exuberance and expansion are radically turbocharged.

This sounds great on the surface, but too much of a good thing could express as hyperactivity, overexpansion, manic behavior or fanaticism. Enjoy yourself, but don’t go crazy!

The hard aspects Jupiter is receiving from Uranus and Pluto within this Grand Cross can also strongly energize other Jupiterian themes: religion, philosophy, higher education and foreign cultures. Uranus and Pluto collectively represent revolutionary transformation, so stay open to new insights, experiences and conceptual breakthroughs in these areas. You might even want to seek them out!

What About the Sun and Mercury?

Technically speaking, there will be days when the Sun and Mercury become members of this Grand Cross. But to avoid unhelpful and unnecessary complexity, I will only speak of the Sun and Mercury in these forecasts as members of the T-square that includes Mars, Uranus and Pluto.

The Grand Cross Springs Back!

This Grand Cross will return with far greater power this spring. Compared to the one that’s coming, this Grand Cross is only moderately strong, with more than 6° separating the widest aspect.

In contrast, the Mars-Jupiter-Uranus-Pluto Grand Cross that starts on 4/6, peaks on 4/22 and ends on 5/14 will feature an exactness of orb rarely seen in such a complex aspect pattern. All four planets will be between 13° and 14° of a cardinal sign, with their greatest separation at peak being less than one-third of one degree!

So while you’ll want to make the most of the current Grand Cross, which is by no means a slacker, you could also think of it as a practice run. The things you’ll be able to accomplish in April and May will be even more amazing!

* Technical Note. Until now, I thought that this Grand Cross started on 1/3. That’s why I didn’t include it in last week’s forecast. But today I changed a setting on my Solar Fire astrology software, expanding the separating orb for squares from 7° to 8°. This made the square between Jupiter and Uranus, the final aspect needed to create this Grand Cross, begin on 12/28 instead of 1/3.

Mentoring in practical matters is smoothly and energetically supported with Capricornian Mercury sextile Chiron.

12/31 (Tue)

The urge to learn and speak the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth can be powerful on New Year’s Eve. Is it the alcohol, or is it Mercury conjunct Pluto? With both planets in Capricorn, this yearning for full disclosure can particularly apply to business matters and your worldly structures.

Mercury is also square Mars today, an aspect that can lead to unnecessary arguments and verbal confrontations if not used mindfully. Thankfully Mars is in Libra, which makes it easier to tune in to how others might respond to what you’re saying. On the high side, this aspect can positively energize your thoughts, writing and speech.

The Mercury-Pluto conjunction and Mercury-Mars square are part of the Sun-Mercury-Mars-Uranus-Pluto T-square.

Mentoring in business and other practical matters is supported with the Capricornian Sun sextile Chiron.

Happy New Year!

New Moon

The new year gets off to an unusually intense start with 2014′s most powerful New Moon! The Sun and Moon align at 6:14 AM (10°57′ Capricorn).

For starters, any New Moon in Capricorn supports new beginnings in business, career, reputation and your productive accomplishments in the world. It can also help you take your maturity, responsibility, time management, planning and execution to the next level.

Aspects

What makes this New Moon so powerful are its aspects. To make a long story short, this lunation lands smack in the middle of the Grand Cross I interpreted at such great length on 12/30. Please (re)visit that Grand Cross interpretation now to see why I’m calling this the most powerful New Moon of 2014!

Go ahead, I’ll wait….

With that Grand Cross interpretation fresh in your mind, you can appreciate how powerful this theme of new beginnings is. The New Moon conjuncts Pluto, squares Mars and Uranus, and opposes Jupiter! All of the Grand Cross planets are in cardinal signs, the energy of new beginnings. The New Moon itself represents new beginnings. And it happens on the first day of the year, the time when new beginnings are foremost in the collective consciousness.

Have you planned your new beginnings for 2014 and targeted their implementation dates? If not, I recommend doing so at your earliest opportunity!

Sabian Symbol

The Sabian Symbol for this New Moon provides further encouragement. It is, “Pheasants display their brilliant colors on a private estate.”

The private estate indicates wealth. But while wealth can be measured in dollars, it can also be anything that you value. This symbol indicates that your wealth, however you define it, will be magnified when you display your “brilliant colors” (your gifts and talents) to the world.

Sun Conjunct Pluto

Less conscious people may try to use today’s Sun-Pluto conjunction to dominate and control others. To use it in a higher way, surrender to profound personal transformation.

The more you’re willing to become like the phoenix burning to ash and resurrecting, the more benefit you’ll receive from this aspect. With the Sun in Capricorn, this regenerative process of death and rebirth is also available in your business dealings and all the structures in your life.

This aspect is part of the Sun-Mercury-Mars-Uranus-Pluto T-square.

Other Events

Juno, the goddess of marriage and commitment, is in Pisces today through 3/3. The caution is not to engage in unrealistic fantasies about the actual state of your committed partnership. The opportunity is to go to a deeper level of soul blending with your beloved!

The real-world manifestation of inspired creativity is energized with Capricornian Venus quintile Uranus. You can also open to fresh insights regarding your relationships and finances.

1/2 (Thu)

Sidestep the less appealing possibilities of today’s Sun-Mars square by avoiding potentially violent people and situations. Harness this aspect’s higher potential with the upside Martian strategies mentioned earlier in this week’s forecast: mutually enriching sex, exercise, athletics and fighting for a worthy cause. With the Sun in Capricorn, business dealings and practical matters can be powerfully energized!

This aspect is part of the Sun-Mercury-Mars-Uranus-Pluto T-square.

1/3 (Fri)

Mercury-Jupiter oppositions can activate the Blabbermouth Effect. It’s a good thing Mercury is in Capricorn, which prefers bullet points to soliloquies! Make good use of the extra mental power this aspect provides by getting productive with your thinking, writing and speaking.

1/4 (Sat)

No major astrological events. It’s been an intense week; take a breather!

1/5 (Sun)

Be careful not to bite off more than you can chew with the Sun opposing Jupiter. This will be less of a problem than usual under this aspect, since the Sun is in keep-it-contained Capricorn.

Enhanced exuberance, enthusiasm and celebration are yours to enjoy under this aspect. And don’t hesitate to bring an extra measure of joy and fun into your work!

Void-of-Course Moons

It’s best to avoid starting important new projects or making major purchases during void-of-course Moons. “Business as usual” is the optimal strategy. Void-of-course Moons occur when the Moon has made her last major Ptolemaic aspect, but has not yet moved into her next sign.

  • 12/30, 6:37 am – 12/31, 1:03 pm (Capricorn)
  • 1/2, 6:12 am – 12:05 pm (Aquarius)
  • 1/3, 8:47 pm – 1/4, 12 pm (Pisces)

Whatever your Sun Sign, Benjamin’s forecasts can help you make the best use of the current astrological energies.

All dates and times are in the U.S. eastern time zone. Events are most powerful on the dates listed, but their influence will be active for at least several days before and after.

Everyone is affected by these global transits. However, you will be most powerfully impacted when moving planets activate sensitive points in your natal chart.
